R.I.P. 2011: 2011-2011

I seriously missed out on so much music this year it's not even funny. In the last month, I've discovered dozens of albums that came out this year that I overlooked somehow. I'll be spending most of January just catching up. I did listen to some music though, and made a 4-song EP exclusively with songs that came out this year.
I'm giving Soundcloud a try as a streaming solution, downloading is disabled as I uploaded as MP3s and I'm not big on letting these tracks go through yet another transcode before being heard. All 4 four tracks are available in this .zip file HERE.

MUTEBLACK

I saw Mute Math shortly before the release of their first album at a music festival. There were about 50 other people watching them, and the drummer had his headphones duct-taped to his head. They killed it.

"99 Problems" is the only thing Rick Rubin has worked on since Licensed to Ill that's improved by his production. I will stand by that. Even Johnny Cash's American series - a monkey could have sat behind the boards and Johnny Cash would have come out with great albums. Okay, maybe the Slayer albums. Whatever, you don't care! Here's a mashup!

MUTEMATH - Typical
Jay-Z - 99 Problems

Justwood Timbermac

Rumours is a great album for many reasons. One of them being that it's an album about troubled relationships sung by people who are going through some serious relationship troubles themselves - Wikipedia:
At the time, Fleetwood Mac's line-up consisted of guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham, drummer Mick Fleetwood, keyboardist and vocalist Christine McVie, bassist John McVie, and vocalist Stevie Nicks. After six months of non-stop touring, the McVies divorced, ending nearly eight years of marriage. The couple stopped talking to each other socially and discussed only musical matters. Buckingham and Nicks—who had joined the band before 1975's Fleetwood Mac and after guitarist Bob Welch had left—were having an on/off relationship that led them to fight often. The duo's arguments stopped only when they worked on songs together. Fleetwood faced domestic problems of his own after discovering that his wife Jenny, mother of his two children, had an affair with his best friend.
So basically, everyone hated each other, but they managed to make one of the greatest albums of the 70s. Then we have Mr. Timberlake. He's cool, I guess. I wish he'd stop messing around in Hollywood and put out another great pop record. His song is also a bitter farewell to an ex-lover. I'll let someone else dissect the thematic interplay between the two songs.

Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around... Comes Around

Dinosaur Perry -or- What is this I don't even

Look, I'm not proud of everything I've done. One thing I regret is taking about two hours to find a good picture of J Mascis' head and photoshop it onto Katy Perry's body. Just kidding, I don't regret that at all.

Dinosaur Jr. - Feel the Pain
Katy Perry - Teenage Dream

Foot on the Pedal Never Ever False Metal

The 80s, part 2:

Dio - Holy Diver
Beastie Boys - No Sleep till Brooklyn

Note about the distortion on the vocals: it's in the original vocal track, I tried to minimize it but there was really not much I could do. More to come!

Talking Bush

Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill

This begins a series of 80s mashups that I have finished. By finished, I mean finished - I'm looking at the rendered files in front of me and have made ridiculous Photoshopped covers for half of them. so check back next week and I will have another mashup celebrating the worst decade of popular music*.

*I don't believe this. If you believe this, you're a jerk and you need to listen to The Replacements.

The New Beat The New Beat The New Beat The New Beat

The Shape of Punk To Come is one of my favorite albums of all time. Start to finish, it's an insanely solid post-hardcore record, but I like it for the ways in which it confounds expectations - techno interludes? Jazz samples? Middle-eastern string parts? These aren't things you hear on a lot of records that can be categorized as "punk".

As for Justice - well, I like Justice. It sounds good to me. I've got nothing else to say about that.

Noise Of Nazareth
Refused - New Noise
Justice - Waters Of Nazareth

The 90s!

A little while ago, I made 2 mashups using 90s songs for an EP compiled by Eternal Khaos. I've posted my contributions here, but you should download the complete EP HERE. It features tracks by myself, Eternal Khaos, The Bedtime Sisters, G3RST, Oki, DJ Useo, and DJ BritBoy. If you've ever wanted to hear Nirvana on top of Crystal Waters, this is your chance.

Billy Lavigne

As a rule, I only use songs I like. So, I myself am surprised that I'm using Avril Lavigne. But come on. Listen to that electric organ/handclap combo. So catchy. This is also the first time I've used a current pop hit. Might be the last, might not.
Avril Lavigne - What The Hell
Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire

Dropkick Miley

It's been a long time.

I shouldn't have left you
Without a strong rhyme to step to
Think of how many weak shows you slept through
Time's up, I'm sorry I kept you
Thinking of this, you keep repeating you miss
The rhymes from the microphone soloist
And you sit by the radio, hand on the dial, soon
As you hear it, pump up the volume

Miley Cyrus - Can't Be Tamed
Dropkick Murphys - Shipping Off To Boston

I've got a lot more done, tracks will be posted weekly until I run out.
