What's up, how's the last decade been for you. Me, about the same. Anyways.<div><br /></div><div>I never stopped making mashups, although I slowed way down in releasing them. After Tumblr, I sporadically posted stuff to YouTube and Soundcloud, and put them on Reddit which feels a bit like pissing in the ocean, if the ocean was also piss.</div><div><br /></div><div>Recently after getting an email asking for a specific MP3 (which seems to happen every 6 months or so), and out of frustration with the existing publishing platforms and their maximalist approach to copyright enforcement, I gathered the motivation to learn some basic web design and make a website for myself. It's at <a href="http://hawkinsmashups.com" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">hawkinsmashups.com</a>, and it's got all the mashups that I don't think are really bad after listening to them now.</div><div><br /></div><div>I've got probably 50 more completed mashups in the tank that I just never got around to releasing, I'm going to try my best to start releasing them regularly. So uh follow me on <a href="https://soundcloud.com/hawkinsmashups" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Soundcloud</a> or <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/HawkinsMashups">YouTube</a>, or if you're feeling nostalgic for the old days of the internet, just bookmark my website and check in every now and then!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks</div><div>Alex</div>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13906783404924622853noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8230785567110907838.post-42485925157950356812012-01-29T23:23:00.001-06:002012-01-29T23:23:12.192-06:00To TumblrI'm moving my stuff to Tumblr. I like the social aspect of it better, and it's just as customizable as Blogger, so go here:<br />

In the last month, I've discovered dozens of albums that came out this year that I overlooked somehow. I'll be spending most of January just catching up. I did listen to <i>some</i> music though, and made a 4-song EP exclusively with songs that came out this year.<br />
I'm giving Soundcloud a try as a streaming solution, downloading is disabled as I uploaded as MP3s and I'm not big on letting these tracks go through yet another transcode before being heard. All 4 four tracks are available in this .zip file <a href="http://laserbla.de/Mashups/Hawkins%20-%202011%20EP.zip">HERE</a>.<br />

I saw Mute Math shortly before the release of their first album at a music festival. There were about 50 other people watching them, and the drummer had his headphones duct-taped to his head. They killed it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"99 Problems" is the only thing Rick Rubin has worked on since <i>Licensed to Ill</i> that's improved by his production. I will stand by that. Even Johnny Cash's <i>American</i> series - a monkey could have sat behind the boards and Johnny Cash would have come out with great albums. Okay, maybe the Slayer albums. Whatever, you don't care! Here's a mashup!</div>

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<i>Rumours</i> is a great album for many reasons. One of them being that it's an album about troubled relationships sung by people who are going through some serious relationship troubles themselves - <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumours#Background">Wikipedia</a>:</div>
<blockquote>
At the time, Fleetwood Mac's line-up consisted of guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham, drummer Mick Fleetwood, keyboardist and vocalist Christine McVie, bassist John McVie, and vocalist Stevie Nicks. After six months of non-stop touring, the McVies divorced, ending nearly eight years of marriage. The couple stopped talking to each other socially and discussed only musical matters. Buckingham and Nicks—who had joined the band before 1975's Fleetwood Mac and after guitarist Bob Welch had left—were having an on/off relationship that led them to fight often. The duo's arguments stopped only when they worked on songs together. Fleetwood faced domestic problems of his own after discovering that his wife Jenny, mother of his two children, had an affair with his best friend.</blockquote>
So basically, everyone hated each other, but they managed to make one of the greatest albums of the 70s. Then we have Mr. Timberlake. He's cool, I guess. I wish he'd stop messing around in Hollywood and put out another great pop record. His song is also a bitter farewell to an ex-lover. I'll let someone else dissect the thematic interplay between the two songs.<br />

Start to finish, it's an insanely solid post-hardcore record, but I like it for the ways in which it confounds expectations - techno interludes? Jazz samples? Middle-eastern string parts? These aren't things you hear on a lot of records that can be categorized as "punk".<br />

As for Justice - well, I like Justice. It sounds good to me. I've got nothing else to say about that.<br />

Both are spare albums - </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Nebraska</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">'s sweaty, minimalist acoustics and </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Suicide</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">'s cold, minimalist electronics. Both albums' lyrics mirror the musical content, filled with songs of isolation, desparation, and sadness. They're hard albums to listen to, but ultimately two very beautiful pieces of art, and excellent night-driving music. If you don't own both in some format, I highly suggest you get on that.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">For reasons I myself can't explain, I really like this Taylor Swift song. I've combined it here with one of the greatest songs ever written, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' American Girl.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"> <br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">I just created an artist page on Facebook. You knew that, right? You've downloaded and listened to it several times over, right? Well, <a href="http://illegal-art.net/allday/">what are you waiting for?</a> As usual, it's great party music, and a nice look into all of pop music history in one hour, but as usual, there are one or two combinations he totally botches. The one that grated my ears the most was a sample of Fugazi's transcendent post-hardcore jam "Waiting Room" laid underneath Rihanna's creepily sexual summer anthem "Rude Boy". Ever since I read there would be Fugazi on this album, I've been drooling at the possibilities, but Greg Gillis failed here. The songs are waaaay out of key, and it just doesn't work for my ears. So I fixed it. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you:<div><br /><a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/116677/Rude%20Room.mp3"><br /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/116677/Rude%20Room.mp3"><img src="http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o297/alexhawkins/rigazi.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket" /></a></div></div><a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/116677/Rude%20Room.mp3"></a><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/116677/Rude%20Room.mp3"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Rude Room</span></a></div>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13906783404924622853noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8230785567110907838.post-8984973488582610512010-10-31T00:15:00.005-05:002010-12-07T23:09:17.814-06:00X vs. The XX<div style="text-align: left;">1980s punk pioneers meet a 2K9 buzzband that I quite enjoy:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

In the meantime, I've uploaded everything into this nice Mediafire folder: <a href="http://bit.ly/1cafCe"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;">HERE</span></span></a><div><br />This is a bit weird to me, as my last post was almost 11 months ago. Fear not, I've not given up the trade, just a bit short on usable audio production software. Long story short: don't pirate software, kids, it only leads to tears. I'm looking at schools right now, once I'm enrolled I can get a real copy of Ableton Live at a nice discount. Then, I can take all the ideas I've got on playlists, notebooks and scraps of cardboard (seriously) and turn them into reality.</div><div><br /></div><div>But back to my original point. Who are you people, and why are you overloading my free bandwidth, and why now? I mean, I guess <a href="http://fallenandrogyne.tumblr.com/post/141072209/wishforme-borisjohnson-jesus-christ-walks">this</a> probably has something to do with it. Apparently people who use tumblr like mashups featuring Kanye West and Brand New. Speaking of that mashup, that's first on my list of things to redo once I get the proper software. It's going to be better, trust me. And speaking of tumblr, when you hit reblog, would you mind crediting me somehow? Just mention my name, or link back to this site somehow. I'd really appreciate it.</div><div><br />Well, enough about me. I would like to hear from you people. What's up? How was your day?</div>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13906783404924622853noreply@blogger.com8
